Another initiative by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to aid with national suicide prevention programs is development f centers on interventions for the prevention of suicide. In this program, the AFSP has joined with the National Institute for Mental health and other federal agencies to promote large scale studies to test treatments for depression and other disorders that may lead to suicide. Another initiative is the Physician Depression and Suicide Prevention Project which works with a range of other organizations to focus on the high rates of suicide among physicians and physicians in training. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention also has a project called the International Project on national suicide Prevention Strategies which brings together top experts globally to study strategies from different countries regarding suicide prevention. To further national suicide prevention programs, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is also encouraging the Media Project which encourages responsible reporting of suicide by news media as well as a suicide data bank which is a collection of information compiled by mental health professionals who have lost patients to suicide. They submit information so that other researchers can try and analyze trends.
